Wearing a tie does not only makes a man look good, it makes him confident, looking trendy and add more panache to his sense of dressing. When you choose to appear in public, with a beautiful handmade silk tie, you would not only be the cynosure of all eyes, you will also command more respect than others who do not wear ties. 
These days, some men have stopped wearing ties, but you will see a good number of them go about in semi formal ways without ties, and this actually makes their dressing appears incomplete and often times, does not bring out the gentleman nature in them. It is important to note that, when you wear ties, you look good; you feel good; and you also announce yourself to the world that you are bold and confident.
A necktie or simply a tie, is a long piece of cloth, worn, usually by men, for decorative purposes around the neck, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat. Different types include: ascot, bow, bolo, zipper, cravat and knit, while bow ties descended from the cravat types. Neckties are generally unsized, but may be available in a longer size.
In some parts of the world, men and boys wear neckties as part of regular office, during interviews, presentations or, wedding occasions. Some women also wear them as well, but usually not as often as men. Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform, such as military, school, cabin crew, hostesses, chefs, waitresses and some choose to wear them as everyday clothing attire. Others include: professional events, important religious ceremonies, funerals, job interviews, court appearances, and dinners.
According to Wikipedia, Traditionally, ties are a staple of office attire, especially for professionals. Proponents of the ties place in the office assert that ties neatly demarcate work and leisure time.
The theory is that the physical presence of something around your neck serves as a reminder to knuckle down and focus on the job at hand. On the other hand, loosening of the tie after work signals that one can relax.
However, since a necktie is an important part of a man’s wardrobe, when shopping for a new tie, be sure to look at more than, just the price tag and the pattern before you buy. It may seem like a simple accessory, but you don’t want to waste your money on a poor-quality tie. Instead, find something that brings out style and quality to the forefront and fits your budget.
Spotting a quality necktie is just very simple, and an important aspect to consider is the material. High-end ties are typically 100% silk, though you may want a tie made from another material in some situations. Lower-quality ties tend to be made of inexpensive or, thin materials that fall apart more easily. Don’t sacrifice quality on a tie you want to wear to work or make a long-term part of your wardrobe.
While price doesn’t always indicate quality, you can generally expect that ties below N2,000 won’t hold up well. The highest-quality ties tend to fall in the N15,000 upward range, but you shouldn’t feel obligated to spend more than N10,000 for something nice. If it's much more expensive than that, you are probably paying for the brand name more than anything else and there is no need to waste hundreds of naira on an ordinary looking tie, just because it has a designer label on the back.
It is however very important to match the tie correctly with the shirt. Often times, you come across guys who just murder this by wearing wrong ties on shirts which makes their dressing look disastrous!
Experts pointed out that three critical components must be paid attention to, when matching ties to suits and shirts.
First of all, colour is very key, but it may seem arbitrary to many people, A colour wheel is a great foundation for understanding colour. It is largely divided into two, warm and cool colours. Warm colours exhibit vibrance, such as red, orange and yellow. Cooler colours are associated with calm, such as blue, green and purple. The concept of a colour wheel allows us to harmonize colours. Harmony is the process of creating a balanced look.
It is very important to create an ideal colour. Harmony is a situation whereby we have a warm colour set against a cool colour, hence creating visual contrast and an element of pop, something that we would all like to achieve when strutting our latest suit, shirt and necktie ensemble.
Secondly, your tie pattern must also be considered in order to create an element of contrast with the shirt and suit that you are wearing.
As a general rule of thumb, when you are starting out, avoid mixing and matching three patterns, as it could look funny, especially if you are unsure as to what you are doing!
Contrary to what most people originally think, for patterns to be able to pop off each other visually, they do not necessarily have to be different patterns for example, checks against stripes.
While they can be different patterns, they can also be similar patterns in different proportions. It is absolutely critical that, your pattern proportion varies, whether the patterns are similar or different.
If pattern proportions are close to each other, your overall aesthetic will look too cluttered and will do the exact opposite of what you are aiming to achieve.
Finally, you need to pay attention to tonal issues.
Tonal considerations refer to how contrasting your shirt and ties are, as stand alone articles of clothing.
A low contrast shirt refers to a shirt that appears more muted in appearance.
These shirts are predominantly designed with one major color and one minor colour, with the minor colour, being of negligible value, and hence hardly clashing with the major color.
What all this is really getting at, is that a low tonal shirt from afar will look like its one colour, but upon closer inspection, will exhibit more than one colour or a subtle design such as faint stripes. What this creates, when paired with a higher tonal tie, is visual contrast.
While a higher tonal shirt can be worn, it should most definitely be contrasted with a lower tonal tie. Please understand that in this instance, the shirt will usually stand out more than the tie.
In conclusion, when it comes to picking out a tie from your wardrobe, you should bear in mind that, your tie should be darker than your shirt. It ought to stand out against your chest and draw attention to the fact you are actually wearing a tie.
