Funds generated from taxes paid by individuals, organisations, Small and Medium Scale businesses have been identified as one of the sources of revenue that aided the State Government's quick response to combating COVID-19 pandemic when it broke out in the State.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker disclosed this while speaking on a Television Programme, the "Impact of Taxes in the Health sector" in Abeokuta.
Coker said the government was able to access fund easily through the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), to provide necessary facilities needed in the health sector to ensure that the pandemic was contained.
" I believe our quick response to COVID-19, the ability to have Isolation centers ready and provide first Molecular Lab is because we have a fund we can easily access", she said.
According to her, money generated from taxes has enabled the sector to equip and renovate 21 primary health facilities, reviewed the workforce to ensure that the facilities were manned and renovated.
“General Hospitals in Ijaye and Ilaro are well equipped to compare with anywhere in the world. We recruited 82 resident doctors at the tertiary health facilities, purchase mobile digital x-ray and dialysis machines”, adding that much can still be achieved with availability of funds.
She urged citizens to pay their taxes as and when due, "if you don't pay tax, we will not get money to provide essential services, part of which is the Health sector. It is human right to have quality health care", she added.
