The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Ministry of Information Chapel, has elected new executives to run its affairs in the next three years.
Speaking during the inauguration at the Chapel Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Abiodun Awere charged the new executives to be magnanimous in victory and extend hands of fellowship to those who competed with them.
Awere, who was represented by the Director, Planning, Research and Statistics in the Ministry, Mr. Waheed Adeshina, called on them to ensure training and retraining of Union members and exceed the success recorded by the immediate past administration, charging Information Officers to continue to support the government by discharging their roles adequately.
In his speech, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public communication, Hon. Remmy Hazzan commended the Information Chapel for the smooth conduct of the election, lauding the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, for his intervention in making the election a possibility.
He assured that the Governor Abiodun led administration would continue to support the Ministry at ensuring optimal harnessing of Information Officers’ potentials, imploring the Caretaker Committee in the State NUJ to ensure cohesion returns to the body, so that the Union could achieve its mandate as the fourth estate of the realm.
The Electoral Committee Chairman, Comrade Gbenga Owolabi said the election process was in line with the NUJ guideline, as well as, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) safety guideline, in view of the Coronavirus pandemic, adding that the “no face mask no voting strategy” adopted by the Committee was well complied with by voters.
The immediate past Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Adewole Dosunmu and the Director, Public Enlightenment in the Ministry Mr. Tunde Kazeem, both lauded the conduct of the election and the maturity exhibited by voters, describing the election as excellent.
The new Chairman, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, appreciated members of the Chapel for their conduct during the election, assuring that his tenure would "spare neither strength nor effort to ensure we achieve our vision of ensuring that our Chapel takes its rightful place among other chapels, while members’ aspiration is not lost in focus".
Olanrewaju promised that the Union would support the "Building our future Together" Agenda of the present administration, soliciting government’s support in the area of capacity building for members of the Union.
The Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the Ogun State NUJ Council, Comrade Omolola Adeyinka, described the election as peaceful, appreciating the members for conducting themselves in line with the electoral guidelines.
She charged the new executives to continue to make the Union a pacesetter by not relenting in the various capacity building programmes and adequate welfare of members.
Other dignitaries at the ceremony were; the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Kunle Somorin, Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Mr. Emmanuel Ojo and former NUJ Ogun State chairman Comrade Wole Sokunbi.
