MRS. ABIODUN REITERATES COMMITMENT TO VAPPMC

Wife  of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun has reiterated her commitment to the fight against rape and gender based violence in the society.

Mrs. Abiodun made this known at a two-day retreat, organised by the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), in collaboration with the State government for Violence Against Persons Prohibition Management Committee (VAPPMC), held at Conference Hotel, Ijebu-Ode.

           She expressed worry at the increase in the number of cases of sexual assault, rape and murder of young girls and women, saying Nigeria was on the list of countries considered unsafe for women by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

          The First Lady enjoined the Committee to ensure that the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law works effectively to produce intended results in the fight against all forms of sexual and gender based violence, adding that it should do all possible to nip the menace in the bud.

          "As Chairperson of this Committee, it gives me great pleasure to know that I am working with a devoted team, who are resolute in delivering on their expectations with the dedication required for the task ahead", she said

          Mrs. Abiodun proposed a three-part approach in dealing with the issue of violence against persons, especially women and children, which were; Education and Social Protection, Emergency Response and Reporting, as well as Law Enforcement, which she said would be deliberated at the retreat.

          In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Funmi Efuape, said her Ministry had been collaborating with groups and Non-Governmental Organisations to campaign against gender based violence in the State, calling on individuals and organisations to support in the fight against the menace.

          The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Gbolahan Adeniran, enjoined the Committee to present a policy document for purpose of legitimacy, as well as, embark on public enlightenment on the consequences of gender based violence.
