Ogun State Government has disclosed that henceforth, cases bothering on safety of women would be given all sense of urgency and offenders brought to book.The State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun made this known in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, when he received participants of an anti-rape and gender-based rally, organised by the First Lady, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, saying, ‘’the State’s public prosecution team had been charged to ensure that all cases relating to violence against women were fast-tracked and offenders brought to book expeditiously’’.
Governor Abiodun noted that his administration was able to come up with ‘’Violence against Persons Prohibition Committee’’, saddled with the responsibility of looking into issues relating to girl child, women and abuse of all forms, assuring that his administration would ensure that a Law passed in 2017 against violence takes its due course.
The State helmsman while commending the rally by the women said ‘’violence against women in any sort; either domestic violence or rape is not acceptable in the State’’, saying his administration had taken up the case of a lady that was recently raped and suffered spinal cord injuries, as a result of multiple rape incidence.
"The girl in Edo state is just one case of rape too many because we had a similar case in Ogun state, which didn't get the utmost attention. The young lady is currently in a hospital in Lagos, where she is been treated. She suffered spinal cord injuries from this multiple rape incident, and we are taking care of her medical expenses.
‘’Violence against a woman, is violence against someone's sister, aunt, daughter or mother, it could be anyone of us, it is important that we continue to promote this kind of initiative to curb this menace," he said.
Earlier in her remarks, the convener of the anti- sexual and gender based rally, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, enjoined the people of the State not to remain silent on violence against women, adding that there was an urgent need to speak up against such heinous crime in the society.
She said her office was working together with the Violence against Persons Prohibition Committee, to ensure an effective, comprehensive and coordinated response to cases of sexual and gender based violence in the State, calling for more involvement of men in national conversation on violence against women.
Also speaking, a Nollywood Actress, Iyabo Ojo, who was part of the rally, commended the wife of the Governor for the initiative against rape and violence against women, noting that ‘’this would bring to the notice of the authorities, the need to amend the laws that work against the act, called rape, child molestation, as well as women and girl child abuse.
